Known from Three Kings Is. In the north to East Cape, and to as far as Cook Strait. Reported to be common on the offshore islands of North Island; and the most abundant of the larger reef fishes in the Bay of Plenty. Museum: North I., Whangaroa, NMNZ 2638.
